Ascorbic acid, as an analogue of natural vitamin C, was received by Swiss scientists in 1933, and they called it so for the ability to fight with scurvy, which in olden times was called “scurvy”. Vitamin C is recommended to use both during a cold and for the prevention of various viral infections, so taking ascorbic acid is especially relevant in the autumn-winter period to maintain the body.
According to statistics released by the WHO (World Health Organization), almost 95% of our planet’s population is deficient in vitamin C1. And in 20–25% of Russians, the level of vitamin C in the body is below the norm, even in summer2.
Vitamin C, vital to man, is not synthesized by the body itself. That is why it is important that it comes in sufficient quantities from external sources. It can be obtained from food or dietary supplements. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is actively involved in virtually all life processes. Its deficiency leads to a weakening of the immune system, so a person is more often exposed to colds.
Vitamin C:
- helps strengthen the immune system, increases the body’s resistance to bacterial and viral infections, resistance to chemical intoxication, overheating, cooling, oxygen starvation;
- being an antioxidant, it protects cell membranes and, in particular, lymphocytes from the damaging effects of peroxidation (an immunostimulating effect);
- stimulates growth, participates in oxidative processes, tissue respiration, amino acid metabolism, improves the use of carbohydrates and normalizes cholesterol metabolism;
- stimulates the activity of the endocrine glands, especially the adrenal glands, improves liver function, promotes the absorption of iron and normal blood formation, affects the exchange of many vitamins 3.
